Movie and TV Collections By Sport

  |   Article, Commentary

In the metadata world, sports are usually confined to a genre and/or a specific sport might be a tag.  Tags can create loose connections but they do not always help to classify movies and TV shows as being strongly about a particular sport.  The tag “baseball” might be added because the characters went to a baseball game but the plot does not center around the game.  Relying on a tag to group movie and TV titles into a particular sport might inject titles with little to do with a sport.  To cure this problem, Internet Video Archive (IVA) has created editorial collections around the following sports: Baseball, Basketball, American Football, Hockey, and Soccer (football to non-US people).

In many of these sports collections, you will find film series which are their own collection and children of the parent.  For hockey, children collections include film series like Slap Shot or The Mighty Ducks.  For baseball, film series like The Sandlot or Major League are included as children of that collection.

Collections are a great way to help our clients improve recommendations to their users or subscribers.  For a streaming service or VOD provider, this can improve subscriber retention or higher ARPU. For app developers and publishers, it can programmatically create compelling lists that lead to longer engagement rates and ad revenue. Over 400 movies and TV shows have been included in one of our sports collections for our clients to display.

Below are a sample of titles from each particular sport collection that are editors selected as outstanding titles from the collections.

IVA customer’s can access these collection and over 1200 more using our APIs. Contact if you would like to learn more about IVA’s movie and TV metadata and services.
